A splendid duo, soprano Dorothy Baldacchino and award-winner Armenian tenor Sipan Olah, will be participating in the series of lunchtime concerts by giving a performance of love songs and duets at the Monastery of St. Augustine on Tuesday 13th February at 12pm on the eve of St. Valentines Day.
The concert will highlight some of the most delightful love songs written, a wonderful programme featuring Italian romantic songs such as O Mari`, Parlami dAmore Mariu` and Non ti Scordar di me .
The eclectic performance will also feature popular opera extracts such as Mozarts La ci darem la mano and Batti Batti from his opera Don Giovanni. Furthermore, classics such as Griegs Ich liebe dich, Faure`s Chanson dAmour and Lehars Lippen schweigen will be sung along with a number of other charming songs and duets.
The singers will be accompanied by pianist Irina Fedcenko-Carbonaro.
In between joint-managing a family business, Dorothy Baldacchino persists at keeping herself vocally fit and challenged. While she enjoys running and training for half marathons, nothing gives her the adrenaline thrill as working on her passion for singing and opera.
Dorothy Baldacchino's soprano has a pure, agile crystal quality which makes her instrument perfectly suited for works by Baroque, Classical as well as 20th Century composers. Having studied voice technique under the mentorship of soprano Miriam Cauchi and Edinburgh based mezzo Joan Busby. Dorothy read a BA(Hons) in Theatre Studies at the University of Malta, and has gained theatrical experience as a singer-actor as well as Artistic Assistant Director in opera productions locally (mainly with the Astra Theatre - Gozo) as well as abroad (Teatro Coccia, Novarra Italy).
Sipan Olah is an award-winning opera singer (tenor) and choir conductor. He graduated from the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (Armenia), earning an MA degree with honours. His singing professors were well-known bass Barsegh Tumanyan (Yerevan) and the tenor Philip Doghan at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
In 2003, Sipan received a scholarship from the Vladimir Spivakov International Foundation. In 2007, he won the Gold Medal in the Republic of Armenia Arts Festival. From 2007 to 2010, he worked as a tenor vocalist and conductor with the State Vocal Quartet of the Armenian Ministry of Culture. From 2011 to 2013, Sipan was a member of the London Philharmonic Choir, performing at the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall. He founded the Komitas Choir and Cultural Association in London 2013 and is the Artistic Director and conductor of it. In 2014, he was awarded the Komitas Medal by the Musical Union of Armenia.
Sipans solo singing performances in Armenia, Austria, Germany, Russia, Ukraine and the UK have been highly appreciated by both the general public and the media. Of particular note are his performances as Jupiter and Grimaldo in Handels operas Semele and Rodelinda, selection of arias from different operas by Mozart and Rossini. His concert repertoire comprises Baroque arias and ariettas, as well arias and songs from the Classical and Romantic periods, in different languages by a variety of composers. At his solo recital in November 2016 at London's Ealing Town Hall, he performed 20 operatic arias and classical songs.
Sipan Olah recently joined to New choir singers Malta and performed as chorister and soloist in concerts in St Pauls Pro-Cathedral, Valetta and St Publius church, Floriana in December 2017.
After the concert, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a free guided tour of the interesting chambers of the monastery which are adorned with beautiful, historical sacred ornaments.
