A Unique Quintet of Flutes

Maltese and British Flautist join forces to form a unique quintet of flutes. Lead by the international and distinguished flautist Andrea Kuypers and Maltese foremost flautist Silvio Zammit, the Quintet of flutes will be giving a sparkling performance at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina on Tuesday, 2 April 2013 at 8pm.
Andrea Kuypers is a formidable performer who has performed with acclaimed orchestras and has toured the world performing the flute. Andrea is a freelance performer with a wealth of experience spanning over two decades. She has performed and recorded with all the major Scottish Orchestras and further afield. Her highlights include tours of Poland and Germany with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Austria and Spain with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as many memorable concerts and recordings.

Outside Scotland, Andrea has performed with, amongst others, the BBC Concert Orchestra the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Andrea has been fortunate enough to work with such renowned soloists as Mel Torme, George Shearing, Jack Jones, James Galway, Nichola Benedetti and The Priests. Andrea has also worked extensively in the pop world, performing as a backing musician for Scottish band Belle and Sebastian. She appears on many of their recordings including the single 'Waking Up To Us'. She undertook a world tour with the band and travelled to such places as the 
USA, Canada, Japan and Brazil.
Andrea Kuypers is a versatile performer and she played with some of the worlds leading jazz artists whilst working with Tommy Smiths Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, notably a recent Edinburgh Festival performance with Gunther Schuller and Joe Lovano. As well as her large scale work, Andrea enjoys performing with her quartet Arcadia Flute and Strings and the Arcadia duo with her piano accompanist. Andreas TV appearances range from Songs of Praise to Later with Jools Holland.  
Andrea has been responsible for teaching flautists at Edinburgh Napier University for 24 years and runs her own thriving private studio. In addition she conducts the Flutes Unlimited Flute Choir and runs a summer school in France, Flutes du Soleil.
Mro. Silvio Zammit pursued his musical studies in Malta at the Johann Strauss School of Music where he studied with Joseph Corrado and later at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence, Italy, where he studied with Prof. Maria di Sabatini, Prof. Pier Luigi Mencharelli and Roberto Fabbriciani. He attended master classes with international flautist, Emmanuel Pohud and Sir James Galway, and took part in Baroque Music Workshops under the Baroque flute specialist Berthold Kuijkens.
Silvio is also a Fellow of the London College of Music at Thames Valley University and holds with distinction diplomas from this College in chamber music and flute performances.  Silvio has premiered and recorded various Maltese flute compositions by P.P. Bugeja, C.Pace, C.Camilleri, J.Vella, P.Grech, F.Galea, A.Pace. As a founder-member of the Gukulari Ensemble, Silvio has also recorded two CDs featuring 18th and 19th century Malta-related music.
Together with his wife Ramona, Silvio performed in various solo and chamber music recitals in Malta, Italy, England, Austria, Hungary and USA..  He formed part of the National Orchestra for twenty years and is now dedicating his time to teaching and solo performing.
Ramona Zammit Formosa, a versatile and freelancing musician; Laura Cioffi and Clara Galea will also form the Quintet of Flutes. The latter two musicians are currently reading for a BMus (Hons) in flute performance with Andrea Kuypers, at Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland.
This exceptional concert will have an eclectic and stimulating programme. It will feature a classical repertoire with Telemanns La Caccia and Tchaikovskys Dance of the Reed Pipes. It will also feature Debussys romantic Clair de Lune, Legrands Papa Can You Hear Me? from the film Yentl,  as well as Kanders All that Jazz from the film Chicago.
The programme continues on a more vivacious note as the Quintet will perform a number of jazzy repertoires.  The quintet will perform Gerhwins I Got Rhythm, Piazzolas Night Club 1960 (Histoire du Tango) and Bernsteinss Overture to Candide
The event is being organized by Barocco Foundation in collaboration with Palazzo de Piro, with the kind support of Bank of Valletta.
