The Singing Flute


International flautist Andrea Kuypers will be back in Malta to perform in a sparkling concert, which is to be held at the fabulous Villa Bologna, Attard on the 5th of July at 8:30pm. This event will be the closing concert for flute masterclasses, which will be held during this period by Ms. Kuypers.

The flute and piano concert will be placing the spotlight on some of the most beautiful melodies for flute. The repertoire will feature an international cast of flute composers with an eclectic choice of works spanning from the Baroque to the contemporary period.  The programme will reflect the mainstream flute repertoire portraying the works of Blavet, a popoular French baroque composer and Gaubert and Roussel,  popular  French late Romantic Period composers for flute.  The repertoire will also feature the lyrical and beautiful Vocalize by Rachmaninov as well as contemporary bright compostions by Schocker and Scott.

 

Andrea  Kuypers is a freelance performer with a wealth of experience spanning over two decades. She has performed and recorded with all the major Scottish Orchestras and also further afield. Her highlights include tours of Poland and Germany with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Austria and Spain with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as many memorable concerts and recordings.

 

Outside Scotland, Andrea has performed with, amongst others, the BBC Concert Orchestra the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

 

Andrea has been fortunate enough to work with such renowned soloists as Mel Torme, George Shearing, Jack Jones, James Galway, Nichola Benedetti and The Priests.

 

Andrea has also worked extensively in the pop world, performing as a backing musician for Scottish band Belle and Sebastian. She appears on many of their recordings including the single Waking Up To Us. She undertook a world tour with the band and travelled to such places as the USA, Canada, Japan and Brazil.

 

Andrea has played with some of the worlds leading jazz artists whilst working with Tommy Smiths Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, notably a recent Edinburgh Festival performance with Gunther Schuller and Joe Lovano.

 

As well as her large-scale work, Andrea enjoys performing with her quartet Arcadia Flute and Strings and the Arcadia duo with her piano accompanist.

 

Andreas TV appearances range from Songs of Praise to Later with Jools Holland.

 

Andrea has been responsible for teaching the flautists at Edinburgh Napier University for 24 years and also runs her own thriving private studio. In addition she conducts the Flutes Unlimited Flute Choir and runs a summer school in France, Flutes du Soleil.

 

Ramona Zammit Formosa commenced her pianoforte studies in Malta with Fay Griscti Davies LRSM, LTCL and pursued further studies in Holland with Prof. Marcel Baudet and in England at the London College of Music with Bryce Morrison, where she also studied flute and harpsichord obtaining performing diplomas with distinction.

 

With her husband flautist Silvio, Ramona recorded a CD of Carmelo Paces Flute and Piano Works entitled Silver Landscapes and is also featured on Divertimento, a CD of Prof.C. Camilleris flute, clarinet and piano works.

 

Ramona is also founder-member of the Gukulari ensemble where she also recorded two CDs performing the 18th and 19th century Malta-related compositions.

 

Ramona regularly gives recitals on the clavichord. In 2005, Ramona  was the first Maltese to give a clavichord recital in Malta, on three clavichords built by Dr. George Debono. Besides giving numerable recitals on piano, flute, harpsichord and clavichord locally, she has performed in England, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium and U.S.A. She is a fellow of the London College of Music and teaches piano and flute at the Johann Strauss School of Music
